WILD SWANS, Three Daughters of China, by Jung Chang (China in 19th and 20th Century) Written by the youngest of the three (the granddaughter) - true account, explores living during the takeover of China by the Communist regime. What the people of China experienced during these times of terror and the rule of Mao Zedong.

THE LAST EMPRESS, The Life and Times of Alexandra Feodorovna Romanova, by Greg King   (Russia in 19th-20th Century) Insights into the downfall of the Russian Empire and the rise of the Soviet state.  Nicholas' and Alexandra's role in hastening the end of the 300 year Romanov dynasty. How 'Alix' was related to other European royalty.

A FINE BALANCE, Rohinton Mistry, (India in 20th Century) experience the Indian caste system. Very engaging true account.

CHILD OF THE DARK, the Diary of Carolina Maria de Jesus (Brazil, 20th Century)
(explore the slums, aka favelas, the deep hunger, of Sao Paulo with a woman who lived it. This book has become a classic. Maria de Jesus wrote on strips of scrap paper, finally putting this book together.)

WHEN THE EMPEROR WAS DIVINE: A NOVEL by Julie Otsuka  (USA, WWII, Japanese Internment Camps in the American West as seen through the eyes of a Japanese family who experienced it.)

IN MY HANDS, MEMORIES OF A HOLOCAUST RESCUER, by Irene Gut Opdyke with Jennifer Armstrong (Poland, WWII) What it was like for a non-Jew to risk life on a daily basis in order to save the lives of the people Hitler was trying to exterminate. True account by a Polish Catholic woman whose humanity towards others was awe-inspiring.

KHRUSHCHEV: THE MAN AND HIS ERA, BY TAUBMAN  (Soviet Union, 1950s, 1960s)
